A small group recently rallied to save lives.
Naperville resident Bob Hudetz organized the first Naperville Be the Match Walk.
Attendees walked two miles on the Riverwalk and were encouraged to join the National Bone Marrow Registry.
They learned about the process from registry representatives and met people who’ve been through it.
“When you first tell somebody that you’re going to donate bone marrow, their first reaction is ‘Oh, isn’t that painful,’” said Hudetz, who has donated marrow. “The reality of it is it’s as simple as giving blood.”
“It does save lives,” said Paul Orednik, a bone marrow recipient. “I’m an example.”
Joining the registry is as easy as swabbing four Q-tip like devices around in your mouth for DNA samples.
