Rachel Maddow Visits

Hundreds packed into the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove for a special event held by Anderson’s Book Shop.

MSNBC host, Rachel Maddow, spoke about her first book Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, which was published in 2012 and is now available in paperback.

Drift examines how America’s state of perpetual war has drifted from what the founding father’s has envisioned for our country, and how Americans are oddly at peace with the human and financial costs of endless wars.

Maddow discussed the various ways policy decisions made by our leaders effect how we see war, like when the Bush administration wouldn’t include the costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars into the budget.

“And there’s no war costs in the budget. Ever. Every year it’s a supplemental emergency,” says Maddow. “One of the things the Obama administration did, is they started putting the war costs in the budget ,and we see how massive the spending is.”

After her speech, Maddow answered questions from the audience who wanted her thoughts on gun control, same sex marriage, and whether she preferred radio or television.

Every guest received a signed copy of her book at the event.
