Putting a Freeze on Holiday Hazards

The Fire Department wants to put a “freeze” on holiday hazards by bringing attention to the things around the home that could cause them.

“Things like Christmas lights, string them according to the manufacturer’s instructions, don’t string too many together and if they have frayed edges, get rid of them,” said Bureau Chief of Community Services for the Naperville Fire Department, George Hyland.

Hyland also recommends keeping your tree hydrated; dried pine needles could increase the risk of fire.

Candles can also cause a fire hazard in the home, so Hyland recommends using LED ones or air fresheners.

And once the temperatures drop and the snow falls, be sure to be smart about snow removal.

“A lot of times when we get snow, we get that heavier snow people go outside to shovel like they’ve always done in the past but now it’s heavier and harder to move people tend to hurt their backs or even have heart attacks,” said Hyland.

When clearing snow be sure to check on neighbors and use the buddy system.
