Once again changing to a progressive tax system was up for debate in DuPage County.
The Economic Development Committee heard from experts on both sides of the issue.
With the state’s temporary income tax increase set to expire next year, lawmakers are proposing changing the current flat tax to a progressive one to make it more fair.
Under a progressive income tax system rates would increase as the amount of money you earn increases.
But, according to groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Republican Caucus changing the system would negatively impact businesses and hurt job growth.
After hearing both sides the DuPage County Board Economic Development Committee voted 4-1 to oppose changing the tax system.
That recommendation will now go to the DuPage County Legislative Committee for consideration.
State legislators would have to vote on the proposals and pass them with a three-fifths majority.
Voters could then voice their opinion on amending the constitution through a referendum in the November election.
