Positively Naperville Celebrates 15 Years

The monthly paper, Positively Naperville, began distribution in 2001, when the first edition was handed out along the parade route at the Naperville Jaycee’s Last Fling.

“I am also a writer at the Daily Herald and when I started writing that column in 1999, I started getting loads and loads and loads of stories happening in Naperville that never saw print. So I thought why can’t we have a bigger neighbor section that’s dedicated to good news and happens in Naperville?” said Stephanie Penick, Founder and Editor of Positively Naperville.

While there have been some changes within those years, like transitioning to all color format, and daily digital posts, the focus remains the same. To “catch the spirit of Naperville” by highlighting small businesses, special events and volunteerism around the community, a goal that hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“The best parts have been the feedback that we receive and it’s very, very touching, sometimes you’ll do something for somebody and out of the blue they’ll send you flowers, they’ll just be so appreciative that they were mentioned in the paper, and those little things it’s just you don’t expect, that’s not why you do it, they’re very touching,” said Penick.

At her side along the journey is her son, Tim, who’s enjoyed the family aspect of the job.

“I think just because of the way I was raised to be creative or to think outside the box all the time, and the biggest thing that I enjoy working with family is that you have creative license to do what you want,” said Tim Penick, Digital Editor at Positively Naperville.

Growing a more positive community one paper at a time.
