At 12:04pm on October 6th the Naperville Fire and Police Departments responded to an emergency call at Xsport Fitness.
Experienced pilot 63 year-old Lloyd McKee and his wife, 66 year-old Maureen were on a trip to Pittsburg when their plane somehow lost altitude and crashed into the building at 75th St. and Beebe Road, less than half a mile from their take-off at the Aero Estates runway.
Fortunately, none of the 280 people inside the gym at the time were hurt. One of the people inside happened to be an NCTV17 employee, Jay Gosiniak, who was working out at the time. He captured some of the first footage of the rescue efforts after immediately evacuating the facility with other gym members.
“I just heard a big thump, looked over there and you could see a little bit of light and you could hear people scurrying out of the gym” said Gosiniak. “Then I heard all the staff [yell] ‘Get out! Get out!’”
As for the couple in the plane, they sustained broken bones and lacerations. They’re being treated at Edward Hospital.
“I predict that they will make a good recovery,” said Tom Scaletta, Medical Director at the Edward Hospital ER. “I don’t think that they’ll have anything that will turn out to be a life-threatening or limb-threatening problem.”
d McDevitt is the McKee’s neighbor also an experienced pilot. He says that perhaps the most fortunate – and unusual – part of the whole story is that no fire ever broke out at the scene.
“In that plane that he has and the plane that I have, the fuel is carried in the wings,” McDevitt explained. “And so the wings were probably severed in some fashion to eliminate the fuel from any heat source.”
Crews spent the night airlifting those wings and other parts of the wreckage from the building. Looking at the gym 24 hours later, it’s hard to believe such a thing ever happened. The side of the building where the plane crashed is completely repaired the gym is now open again.
The Federal Aviation Administration continues to investigate the exact cause of the crash.
