The giving spirit was in full force at Lincoln Junior High, thanks to one girls desire to keep people warm.

Sixth grader Sophia Martinez wanted to use her love of sewing to make a difference.

“My mom used to tell us about how we are so lucky to have food, clothing and a roof over our heads and I just thought I could give those kids a little something more,” said Sophia.

So she started P’Jammerz, a charity dedicated to sewing pajama pants for kids in need.

Initially, she offered the pants to DuPage PADS when they visited First Congregational Church for a shelter night. Once she found out they did the same at St. Margaret Mary Parish, she wanted to help there as well.

“There’s a need out there and neither one of us really knew until we started this,” said Emily Martinez, Sophia’s Mother.

The larger need meant that Sophia couldn’t do it alone, so she enlisted the help of her Lincoln Junior High community.

Over 20 students and parent volunteers gathered to help sew the P’Jammerz, each making at least one pair.
