All Aboard! Your commute may be more pet friendly thanks to Amtrak.
The railroad company has launched its carry on pet pilot program on two of its trains, serving nine cities, including Naperville.
One car on each will be designated for passengers with dogs and cats weighing 20 pounds or less who must be in carriers that fit under the seat.
The pilot will run through November but may continue if successful.
“We’ll be talking to pet owners and of course other passengers on the train to see how well this was handled,” said Marc Magliari, Media Relations Manager for Amtrak. “We’ll also see if the procedures we put in place made sense & are workable. It’s not going to be based necessarily on the volume of pets we carry but how well we carried the pets we do.”
There will be a $25 fee for traveling with your pet, except for service dogs, which have always been allowed on board free of charge.
Passengers must register their cat and dog at least 48 hours prior to their trip.
