The summer heat is upon us. The Chicago area has already seen nearly 20 90+ degree days in 2012. Just like humans, keeping your four legged friends safe in the high temps is extremely important. The Naperville Area Humane Society offers a few tips to ensure your pets’ safety.
“Make sure you really limit their outside time,” said Angie Wood, Executive Director, Naperville Area Humane Society. “You want to get them out and go potty and get them back in. Especially for those that are really old or really young. Kind of like humans, dogs are the same way.”
Exercising your pet outside is fine, but do it in short spurts with a lot of breaks. If your dog is outside, make sure they have a shady area. Another idea, fill a kiddie pool for them to cool off. As for those beloved walks, carry extra water for your pet and give them fresh water when they come inside. Grooming is another option to keep them cool, but Wood says if they aren’t used to it just stick to the other strategies. And remember to never leave your pet in a parked car even for a minute.
