Councilman Paul Hinterlong brought to the rest of the council’s attention the possible need to address pedestrian safety at local schools. He cited several recent accidents where motorists seem to have no regard for children walking into schools.
“One child got hit the other day and the woman rolled down her window and said, ‘Are you okay?’ and just drove off,” said Hinterlong.
He fears the problem may get worse during the spring as more children walk and bike to school.
He suggested increasing police presence before and after school to deter drivers from speeding or driving recklessly in school zones. Chief Robert Marshall says he already has procedures in place to do so in the coming months.
