Every year 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold across the U.S.
For many families, scoping out that perfect evergreen to decorate for Christmas can be a fun tradition. For others it can be a real burden.
So rather than lugging a heavy pine tree home yourself, one Chicago-based company can deliver a live Christmas tree right to your doorstep.
“The Christmas Tree Company” sells their Fraser firs online at www.christmastreecompany.com. The evergreens are delivered via FedEx from the mountains of North Carolina to one’s doorstep in a matter of days.
“What we’re sending out direct to your door is a premium grade Christmas tree. It is has been tagged well, well in advanced, pruned, taken care of and such so it’s going to have perfect symmetry, great density, wonderful taper,” said Dave Godsoe, President of the company. “You’ve got an absolutely perfect tree that’s cut 24 hours before it’s shipped to your home so you’re looking at a very short window of time from the time we harvest that tree to the time it reaches your home.”
The company says mail order trees are growing in popularity and offer a convenient alternative to picking out a tree from a lot.
“Christmas tree lots can be a lot of fun. However, those trees are harvested well in advance of you putting that tree into your home. A lot of times those trees will be harvested in early September straight on through so you really don’t know how fresh of a tree you’re actually getting,” said Godsoe. “If you are somebody living in an urban environment without a vehicle, order online could be more convenient.”
The Christmas Tree Company not only sells the holiday staple, but also donates it at times.
This year, the group gave a free evergreen to the Naperville not-for-profit Little Friends Center for Autism and it now brings holiday cheer to four women in one of their group homes.
“A live tree is a bit of an extravagance for an agency that functions on good will and charitable donations this time of year,” said Kristi Landorf, Little Friends President and CEO. “I think a real tree smells and looks beautiful and one of the goals of the agency as a whole is to make sure that the people we serve like the women whose home we’re in have access to the same holiday festivities that we do.”
“I love to see people’s faces when they receive such a package cause you can almost smell the North Carolina mountains coming from the box, first of all, so the box clearly smells like a Christmas tree and then once you open it up it just umbrellas into this very beautiful tree and it’s a very exciting moment,” said Godsoe. “So the reception of such an icon that really identifies Christmas means an awful lot, whether that’s going to a group home or whomever we might send a tree to.”
The Christmas Tree Company hopes this is just the start of a new tradition and plans to give Little Friends, Inc. a new tree each year.
