Just a week after attempts by Illinois lawmakers to pass tax incentives for the new Office Depot Inc. were put on hold, the company has announced they won’t be bringing their headquarters to Illinois.
On December 10, the company announced that Boca Raton, Florida, the location of Office Depot will be the new home for the company formed by the merger with Naperville based OfficeMax.
A statement released by Office Depot Inc.’s new Chairman and CEO Roland Smith said, “both Florida and Illinois have many positive attributes, but our analysis concluded that Boca Raton provides the best platform for us to achieve planned synergies, leverage assets to drive improved profitability, and launch a compelling vision for the future.”
About 1,600 OfficeMax employees will now have to wait and see if they will be offered a job in Florida with the new company or be let go.
