Every month, Naperville-based OfficeMax surprises a District 203 educator with the Teacher Innovator Award. But the most recent award went to a team of three teachers at Beebe Elementary School.
Rosa McCormick, Marisela Weir, and Sheila Lostumbo teach both English and Spanish-speaking students in kindergarten, first, and second grades. They believe creativity in the classroom engages students of different cultures.
“We teach the same curriculum as our grade level counterparts but then you have to think about how are we going to teach that because at any given time during the day, half the class is learning in their second language,” said Lostumbo.
“We use a lot of gestures and a lot of visuals and several other strategies to help the students along,” Weir said.
OfficeMax staff rewarded the Dual Language Team with their Teacher Innovator Award and a gift card, camera, and printer.
“It’s just wonderful that they even think about teachers and that they recognize that we teachers spend so much money every year because we want to have the special projects with the students,” Rosa McCormick said.
“Every single person here on our staff exceeds expectations and just goes above and beyond and these three teachers are a perfect example of that. They are very innovative. And the children have fun learning and they build fantastic relationships not only with the parents, but the entire community.”
Parents Heather Scott and Kathy Kauffman nominated the trio for the award. They say the teachers instill in each child respect for other cultures.
“What these women do is absolutely incredible,” Scott said about the Dual Language teachers. “We love it and I can’t wait to get my younger daughter Evelyn into the program.”
“What they do is literally amazing so the fact that they’re recognizing all these innovative things that these schools are doing, highlights above other districts and other venues that our schools and our teachers are wonderful and deserve some recognition.”
OfficeMax and District 203 administrators recently came together to celebrate all the Teacher Innovators throughout the year.
They also honored Maplebrook Elementary School art teacher, Karen Barrenbrugge, with the Teacher Innovator of the Year Award.
