Local students are getting real world experience while still in high school.
Students at Neuqua Valley High School are taking their business education from the classroom to the boardroom by partnering with real Naperville companies.
“We’ve been really fortunate this year, and have had a lot of local businesses reach out and let us be apart of their daily business activities,” said NVHS Business Teacher, Beth Knuth.
What started as one business internship class, has grown to offer numerous hands on experiences in every class.
Most recently marketing students put together a full business plan for local T-shirt company, Big Frog.
The winning team was awarded $1000, plus an additional $500 for the business department.
“We put together a marketing plan to increase sales 20% in the month of June and July for Big Frog,” said senior, Tommy Brown. “We did a lot of social networking stuff, things with churches and golf outings, basically anything within the $30,000 range that they gave us to increase sales in June and July.”
On top of competitions seniors can opt to be apart of a VEI program, which the department started last year.
“We are a virtual company, so it’s a simulation of what an actual company would be like in the real world. Our experiences here are going to prepare us for what its like in the real business world,” said senior, Matt Perigo.
The class works as a business, students get to learn the ins and outs of each sector, starting with a mock interview.
“We bring in members of the community to interview our students because they are interviewing for jobs in our virtual company. So if they want to be and accountant or a marketing manager we bring in an actual accountant or marketing manager,” said Department Chair, John Hanson.
The virtual company is completely student run from coming up with product ideas to fundraising for trips to trade shows around the country.
“We just got back from one in san Francesco and the cost and expenses are pretty high for that so we do fund raisers to cut some of those costs,” said Perigo.
Students throughout the whole department realize the experiences they have at Neuqua will better prepare them for the business world.
“This will definitely help me when I am in an actual marketing setting because I know what marketers do and so I feel like if I already know what they do on a daily basis, I’ll be a head of everyone else,” said Junior Megan Machota.
