One bronze bird has made the College of DuPage its permanent nesting grounds.
At the Glen Ellyn campus, students now walk by a new 8-foot tall statue of a chaparral in front of the student resource center every day.
The chaparral, more commonly known as a roadrunner, isn’t native to Illinois but has been COD’s mascot since its founding in 1967.
Back then, there was no central campus, so faculty and students had to drive from class-to-class, and were dubbed “roadrunners.”
The college decided to have the statue installed as part of a $550 million campus facelift.
The sculpture itself cost $54,000, 51% of which was funded by student activity fees. The rest was covered by the overall construction budget.
