The Naperville Park District will soon be adding a brand new building.
They are in the process of purchasing 5.2 acres across from Player’s Indoor Sports on Quincy Avenue for a new activity center.
“I think we’ve done a phenomenal job with outdoor facilities and outdoor amenities,” said Ray McGury, Executive Director for the Naperville Park District. “I hate to say drop the ball, but we’ve dropped the ball indoors and we know it.”
The park district currently rents their indoor space from other entities, but has tried to build their own twice in the past, even as recently as 2007. But because of cost and location those were both shut down.
“I’m not advocating that what we are proposing is something you can buy at Lowe’s and put grass cutters in, but it’s going to fit the motif of where it’s going,” said McGury. “It’s going to be a functional space. It’s not going to be the Taj Mahal.”
The new facility will consist of basketball courts, a track, a fitness area, and meeting rooms.
The project will cost about $20 million for the property and the building. They hope it will be up and running by 2016.
