The Naperville Park District is unsure if they want to contribute to another military statue to be installed in Burlington Park.
At their latest meeting, the board voted 5-2 to reject a proposal to donate $10,000 to the century walk group’s statue ‘Spirit of American Navy.’
Brand Bobosky from the Century Walk originally asked for $25,000 earlier in June, but the board passed on making a decision at that time.
The city has already okayed $25,000 from the SECA fund to help pay for the statue, but only if the century walk finds other donors.
Despite the vote the Park District will still be involved with the project.
“We are going to participate in the maintenance with 72 years left on the lease,” said Rich Janor, President of the Park Board. “So if you factor in the two percent inflation we’ll be contributing over $300,000 over the course of the lease.”
Janor also said that the board is wary of making such a large contribution of tax money to the statue because it may spur other requests.
