A panel of healthcare experts came together to discuss the condition that plagues 18% of children age 6 to 11 in the United States.
Hotel Arista was filled with healthcare professionals for the “Strategies for Pediatric Obesity Prevention and Control” summit.
The goal of the summit was for area healthcare providers to gain a better understanding of how to treat and prevent childhood obesity, as well as, how to talk to patients and family members about weight problems.
“Over the course of four years, the data we have collected has stabilized. Thirty-three percent of our children, and as many as 65% of our adults are at-risk for overweight or obesity, that’s one in three children. For us, that’s a critical and earth-shaking number. Our goal with the Forward Initiative is through all of these interventions in these population groups is to really work very closely to create resources that will reduce those BMI rates,” said Ann Marchetti, Consulting Director for the Forward Initiative.
The event was sponsored by the “Forward Action Network,” an obesity prevention initiative of the DuPage County Health Department.
