Swinging, jumping and leaping- watch out world, these kids are on their way to becoming ninja warriors thanks to a class at the Naperville Gymnastics Club.
“This is the Parkour Ninja Warrior class. We do a lot of fundamental basics we basically just build balance and common skills that a lot of kids know how to do to overcome obstacles,” said Alexander Paulus, Parkour Ninja Warrior Coach at the Naperville Gymnastics Club.
While it may look like just fun and games, these eight to ten-year olds, like Anthony Dik, are learning, too.
“I just like how it’s kind of individual and you learn how you want and what your style is, like jumping from things and just doing flips,” said Dik.
Similar to the popular T.V. show American Ninja Warrior, by doing conditioning training, maneuvering through an obstacle course, and testing agility skills on the bars, these young ninja warriors are learning to anchor their strength and master their moves.
“Kids are lanky, and awkward and clumsy, so you get to teach them how to be in control of their body,” said Paulus.
It’s a lesson that’s hit home for this group of boys, but they’ve learned it takes more than fancy footwork to reach a high level.
“You have to get balanced, and you have to jump from things to things, you have to work on your grip, and all your body strength is really important,” said Dik.
And even the experts get something out of the non-traditional class.
“Kids like Anthony, who you interviewed, they love the sport, they love the movement, everything about it is just something they want to learn, so it just makes me happy to be able to give them my knowledge,” said Paulus.
The Ninja Warrior Class at Naperville Gymnastics Club is offered to kids and adults ages three through 18.
