Naperville residents recently sought guidance and strength during the sixty-first annual National Day of Prayer.
Held in the Municpal Center, people of all faiths gathered at noon to worship together.
Mayor George Pradel, along with eight different community leaders and pastors led the group in prayer.
The theme for this year’s event, “One Nation Under God”, Comes from Psalms 33:12.
There have been more than nine hundred state and federal calls for national prayer since 1775. In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a law to make National Day of Prayer an annual observance. In 1988, Ronald Reagan designated it to be the first Thursday in May.
“It doesn’t matter which side of the aisle we sit on. It doesn’t matter what our political views and our opinions are. It doesn’t matter. Because today we get to as a nation, under God, lift up our holy savior,” said Rev. Steve Spangenberg. Spangenberg is the pastor of Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Naperville.
