Prayer At DuPage County Board Meetings Questioned:

Some new Democrats on the DuPage County Board are questioning whether prayer should be included at the start of board meetings. Traditionally religious leaders of varying faiths are invited to start off regular board meetings with an invocation. But newly elected Dawn DeSart called that practice into question at the latest board meeting, saying there should be a separation of church and state, and the practice should be discontinued. Some Republican board members argued to continue the invocations, saying they’ve included many different faiths, encourage diversity, and do not require the audience to participate. For now, no formal steps have been taken to eliminate the invocation.

Penny Wars at Benet:

This morning, students at Benet Academy participated in the school’s annual Penny Wars. Each class plus the faculty collect change throughout the week with the winning class earning a non-uniform day. All of the money is taken to the bank and counted with pennies being worth a point and all other coins worth negative points. The senior class traditionally wins the competition and they didn’t disappoint this year, stacking 55 $25 bricks of pennies as well as filling multiple 5-gallon buckets. The proceeds are included in the larger Benet Christmas Drive fund, which supports local charities. Last year their two-week fundraising efforts raised $100,000.

Wolves at the Library:

It was a fun time at the 95th Street Library last night when a Chicago Wolves hockey player stopped by for a special visit. Number 32, Zach Whitecloud, is the 22-year-old Wolves defenseman who was joined by young fans for the Read to Succeed program. Zach talked about how he made it to the American Hockey League, his favorite books growing up, and the importance of working hard in school. A lucky fan even got to try on Zach’s practice gear and everyone walked away with prizes and autographs.

Conference Change for NCC Volleyball:

In North Central College Athletics, the men’s volleyball team will be changing conferences for the 2020 season after it was announced this week the CCIW is adding men’s volleyball as a conference sport. The Cardinals have competed in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League since the program began in 2016 and won the MCVL regular season championship last year. The Men’s Volleyball version of the CCIW will feature, North Central, Carthage, Augustana, Millikin and North Park. Loras College and Greenvillle University will serve as associate members.
