Naperville Now 11-17-17

First Gold Coin Found

The first gold coin of the season was found last night right here in Naperville in a Salvation Army kettle outside Casey’s Foods. It’s the first to be donated this year in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana region. The coin is worth almost $1300 and was also found with a silver pendant worth about $17. The money will benefit the Salvation Army Aurora chapter.

 Cantigny Community Trees

And in the Christmas spirit the McCormick museum is celebrating its eighth annual “community trees” event. Seven different local charities, three of which are based in Naperville, decorated their own Christmas tree. The non-profit organizations included 360 Youth Services, Naperville Responds for Veterans, and the Resiliency Institute. Each participating group gets a $2,500 grant from the Robert R. Mccormick Foundation and the agency whose tree gathers the most votes receives an additional $2,500. Museum visitors can vote for their favorite community tree and make donations to the organizations that decorated them.

All State Football Teams

The Illinois Coaches Association released the All State football teams last night, and three local players made first team honors. In class 8A Jayden Reed was electric as a receiver for Naperville Central every time he had the ball in his hands. The senior and quarterback Payton Thorne connected for 59 catches, nearly 1200 yards and 13 touchdowns, helping the RedHawks advance to the state quarterfinals.

Naperville North transfer quarterback Drake Davis went from a class 1A quarterback a year ago to the class 8A All State performer this season. The Huskie signal caller threw for more than 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns, leading North to a 6 and 4 record. He also ran for more than 700 yards and 9 additional touchdowns.

In class 7A, on a team full of ball hawking defenders, Connor Reid stands out from the Benet Academy secondary. On a defense that has hauled in more than 20 interceptions this season, Reid has nine of them, good for second place in the school’s record books. The senior corner and his Redwing teammates hope to make it to the state championship game for the first time since 1984 as they host Batavia in the 7A semi finals on Saturday. Congratulations to all three honorees.
