Electric Bills Decrease

A drop in electric bills may be on its way. Naperville’s electric utility made a motion to decrease the city’s electric rates by two percent annually over the next three years. That means the average Naperville resident would see their bill go down by about $24 each of those years, starting in 2019. Naperville’s Public Utilities Advisory Board approved the motion on Thursday; the proposal now goes to Naperville City Council for final approval.

Liquor License Revoked

Mayor Steve Chirico has revoked the Naperville liquor license for Mexican Grille. Acting in his role as Naperville’s Liquor Commissioner, Chirico pulled the license for the restaurant at 1550 North Route 59, as they were serving liquor without a state liquor license, and refilling original liquor packages. Mexican Grille has had a number of code violations, dating back to 2016, which resulted in fines and suspensions. The owner of the restaurant waived their rights to a hearing in this instance, and accepted the revocation, admitting to the violations.

Underwood Ice Cream

There’s a sweet surprise for Naperville Democrat Lauren Underwood. Ben & Jerry’s will be naming a flavor for her this fall. Underwood is one of seven candidates nationwide being backed by the ice cream company’s owners Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in a movement called Take Back Congress, Flavor by Flavor, supported by progressive organization MoveOn. That group has set up a page on their website where folks can suggest flavors, up through September 28. Underwood is running against the Republican incumbent, U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren for the 14th Congressional District seat.

Weekend Football

Friday night was week five of the high school football season and we already have our first playoff eligible team. Waubonsie Valley jumped out to a 21-0 lead over Naperville North behind three touchdowns from Dre’Von Turner. The Huskies scored two touchdowns in the 2nd half and trailed by only 7 when Brandon Guido’s second interception secured a 31-24 win for Waubonsie, who moved to a perfect 5-0 on the season to clinch a playoff spot.

On Saturday, North Central College shut out the Vikings of North Park on the road 35-0. The Cardinals remain undefeated at 3-0 with the Battle for the Little Brass Bell looming on Saturday night against Wheaton.
