Nokia Lay-Offs

Nokia Networks is laying off a significant portion of its Naperville workforce. On September 7, the telecom company told 250 workers they were losing their jobs and is expected to cut 250 more jobs by the end of the year. Nokia attributed the layoffs to consolidation after its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent in 2016.

2000th Set of Multiples

Edward Hospital began caring for its 2000th set of multiples this weekend after Sarah Esche-Lange gave birth to twins Madison and Dylan. Esche-Lange and her husband Erik Lange were admitted to the hospital on July 14 when Sarah began experiencing contractions at week 27 of her pregnancy. After spending eight-and-a-half weeks at Edward, the couple finally went home on Thursday, but came back Friday and the twins were delivered on Saturday morning. Edward’s multiple rate is almost three times higher than the national average, with about one in 30 births resulting in multiples. The newborns, mother, and father are expected to go home today.

Award of Valor

Naperville Firefighter/Paramedic Carl Schultz will receive The Hundred Club of DuPage County’s 2018 Award of Valor for his acts of courage and heroism during a water rescue. On April 27, Schultz’ fire station received a call that a vehicle had entered a retention pond. Upon arrival, Schultz saw the victim go under the water near the vehicle. “I couldn’t see anything under the water. Then I took a deep, deep breath and I tried to go as deep as I could. And then out of the gloom, the murky water, I saw about half a hand and some fingers and it was full extension.” The victim was conscious and taken to the hospital. Schultz will receive the Award of Valor on October 24 at the Lisle/Naperville Hilton.
