Purse Thief Apprehended

Around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, a homeless man attempted to steal a woman’s purse in Downtown Naperville. 19-year-old Steven England attempted to rob a woman’s purse in an alley near the Barnes & Noble store at Washington Street and Chicago Avenue. As the woman refused to let go of her purse, England allegedly began to drag her until he was able to free it. When England attempted to flee, several people nearby the scene heard the woman shout “purse snatcher” and helped apprehend England. Naperville police officers in the area also responded. England was charged with robbery and aggravated battery in a public place.

Niche.com has once again ranked school districts 203 and 204 as some of the top in the state this year. Among the 408 Illinois school districts, Naperville District 203 came in at number three and Indian Prairie District 204 came in at number five. Both districts received A+ ratings for their teachers, activities, college prep, and sports. District 203’s Meadow Glens was also named the top elementary school in the state out of more than 2,000 in Illinois. Niche.com ranks the top K-12 schools and districts based on data from the U.S. Department of Education and more than 60 million school reviews and survey responses.

 

Back to School Fair

Yesterday, Catholic Charities Diocese of Joliet gave a helping hand to DuPage County families who are living on low-incomes. The 28th annual Back to School Fair was a one-stop event, providing back to school needs for nearly 5,000 children. Each kid got a backpack filled with school supplies so they could be ready for their first day of class. The fair also offered a number of health and social services, including free vision screenings and haircuts.

 

Five Star Receives Facility Award

It was recently announced that the Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield is one of 24 winners in the 37th annual United States Tennis Association Facility Awards. The program recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country. With over 1,000 members, including many from Naperville, Five Star has had a successful summer. In addition to this award, Naperville resident Sofia Olaru won both the singles and the doubles titles for the Girls 11 and under division in Newport Beach, California after training at Five Star.
