DuPage County Fair Starts:
It’s a beautiful day for the start of the 64th annual DuPage County Fair. Today kicks off the five-day festival at the county fairgrounds in Wheaton. Visitors will find old favorites like the farming exhibits in Ag-Ventureland carnival rides, the demolition derby, fried foods and of course, plenty of animals – but there are some new offerings as well. Fairgoers can now purchase all-inclusive tickets, which will include entertainment in the grandstand. There are also a couple of new acts, like the animatronic dinosaurs in Dino Mania, and some acrobatic dogs showing off their moves. Not to be outdone, the pigs will also be back to try and hog the spotlight with their pig races. You can find a full rundown of each day’s events at www.dupagecountyfair.org .
Illinois Speed Awareness Day:
But as you head to the fair – be sure to take your time, as today is Illinois Speed Awareness Day. Law enforcement throughout the state, including our own Naperville Police Department, is cracking down on speeders and focusing on education to help promote safety for all those on the road. In Illinois in 2016, speeding caused about 34 percent of traffic fatalities. Higher speeds reduce stop time, safe navigation, and effectiveness of airbags and safety belts – so please, slow down, and you could save a life.
Construction on 75th Street:
There’s another construction alert for Naperville. The outer eastbound lane of 75th Street from Modaff Road to Naper Boulevard will have intermittent closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the next four weeks. That’s to allow time for crews to paint the transmission poles along the street. Officials ask that you use caution when traveling in that area.
Bid for Rugby Youth Olympics:
A Neuqua Valley athlete is looking to land a spot in the rugby Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires this weekend. Will Chevalier of the Neuqua Wildcats football team and rugby club will play on the Red Team in the U18 division of the Saranac Lake Can-Ams in upstate New York. The Youth Olympics roster will be named on July 30th. Chevalier plays for the Neuqua Valley Rugby Club, which has won back-to-back state championships, and he’ll line up as running back for the NV football team this fall.
Napervillian Turns 100!:
And finally, happy birthday to lifelong Napervillian Laura Rott, who celebrates her 100th birthday today. Laura grew up on the Rott Family Farm, located where Meadow Glens Elementary School now sits, and took second place in the first ever Pillsbury BAKE-OFF back in 1949 with her recipe for Mint Surprise Cookies.
