A rabid bat was removed from a Naperville home last week. The brown bat was taken from the home on Salt River Court on Wednesday, and tested positive for rabies. Officials remind residents that if you do find a bat in your home or business, do not touch it. Close the door to the room it’s in if possible, then call animal control or the police to come take care of it.
Train Schedule Changed
Commuters were re-checking their timetables today as the schedule changes for Metra’s BNSF line went into effect. The switch is due to the installation of Positive Train Control, an automatic brake system. Railroad officials hope the changes on their busiest line will help reduce overcrowding and fix gaps in service. Pace Suburban Bus Service has also adjusted their bus schedules to align with the BNSF changes.
NSW Awards Show
Last night Naperville Sports Weekly celebrated the end of its 11th season with the annual Awards Show. The big winners are Lauren Platou of Naperville North girls basketball and lacrosse being honored as Female Athlete of the year. The Huskies senior was an all-area basketball player and finished 2nd in the state in goals for a girls lacrosse team that made it to state for the first time.
Senior Ryan Wheeler of Neuqua Valley is the Male Athlete of the Year thanks to his performance on the gridiron and the diamond. Wheeler is the school’s all-time leader in interceptions in football with 10 after snagging six for the Wildcats this fall, and this spring, he became the baseball program’s all team leader in batting average at .440 and hits with 120. He also had the game-winning hit in the team’s regional championship victory over Yorkville.
Team of the year is shared by the Naperville North girls cross country and track teams, both of whom won the state championship this season. In doing so, the Huskies became the first 3A school in IHSA history to achieve that feat. It was the eighth state championship for North girls cross-country and the first for North track and field.
