County Campus Certificate
The DuPage County government campus is officially an accredited arboretum. The campus was awarded a Level 1 accreditation “for achieving certain arboreta and botanic standards,” from the Morton Arboretum and their partner ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. For the past several years county officials have been enhancing the 202-acre campus that’s home to more than 2800 tree of 42 different species. There are plans to continue these efforts and incorporate more native plants throughout the campus.
Tom Skilling at Naperville Central
On Saturday, the Naperville Park District wrapped up their Earth Week programming with an interactive panel at Naperville Central High School – “Climate Science and Tomorrow’s Forecast.” The panel featured WGN’s Chief Meteorologist, Tom Skilling, Global Environment Director of Accenture, Mike Nicholus, and University of Illinois Professor Don Wuebbles. They discussed the causes of the rapid spread of climate change and how people can impact the problems that it’s causing through technological innovations.
Watch out for Turtles
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is reminding drivers to keep an eye out for turtles this spring. From April through October turtles cross roads in search of food, water, mates, and in particular from mid-May to mid-July, female turtles are crossing to make their nests. If you encounter a turtle on the road, follow the rules of the road and leave plenty of room for the turtle to be seen and avoided. If you find an injured turtle you can call the Willowbrook Wildlife Center.
Naperville Players in NFL
Congratulations to former Waubonsie Valley football player Troy Fumagalli on being selected in the NFL Draft on Saturday. The Denver Broncos drafted the All-Big Ten tight end out of the University of Wisconsin in the fifth round. Troy is the first Naperville area player selected since Naperville North alum James O’Shaughnessy was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. The Denver Broncos have several recent Naperville connections. Former Naperville Central star Owen Daniels was a tight end for the Broncos team that won Super Bowl 50 in 2016. Denver also has Naperville North graduate Matt Lacosse on the team’s roster after acquiring him in a trade late last season.
