City Salt Use
The temperature in Naperville is expected to hit near 70 today, but the City is reflecting on cooler times. This year the City used 8,500 tons of salt during the winter season, compared to 22,000 tons of salt that was used during the snowy 2014 winter season. The Department of Public Works estimates that the decrease will end up saving the City a projected $200,000 in calendar year 2017.
World Tuberculosis Day
Today is world Tuberculosis day or TB day, a time to bring awareness to and fight the disease. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that typically affects the lungs but can present itself in other areas of the body. Symptoms include weight loss, chest pain and a bad cough. While cases are low in the U.S. doctors recommend getting tested if you’ve been to areas like India, Indonesia and South Africa.
Local Star Shines in NCAA
Last night was another big NCAA tournament moment for a Naperville area resident. Nearly two years after former Benet star Frank Kaminsky led Wisconsin to the national championship game, another former Redwing standout, Sean O’Mara, scored 8 points, including the go ahead basket with 45 seconds left to propel 11 seed Xavier into the Elite Eight after a 73-71 win over 2nd seeded Arizona. O’Mara was the leading scorer and rebounder of the Benet state runner up team in 2014. The junior is playing his best basketball of the season for the Musketeers, averaging over 12 points per game in the NCAA tournament. Xavier will face number one seed Gonzaga on Saturday for a trip to the final four.
