Naperville Township Public Forum
Naperville Township hosted a public forum at the Municipal Center last night to educate the public on an upcoming referendum for township residents. The referendum asks, “Shall the Road District of Naperville Township be abolished with all the rights, powers, duties, assets, property, liabilities, obligations, and responsibilities being assumed by Naperville Township?” If voters choose yes, Naperville Township officials say there will be little to no change in services or taxes imposed on township residents. If voters choose not to abolish the road district, a 2017 referendum will likely come into effect to merge the Naperville Township Road District and the Lisle Township Road District into one government entity. Officials told voters that would likely cause a 50 percent tax increase in taxes for Naperville Township residents, while Lisle Township residents will see their taxes decrease by 22 percent. This was the final public forum on the issue and voters will decide on April 2.
Atheist blogger and author Hemant Mehta gave the invocation at this morning’s DuPage County Board meeting. It was the first time an atheist gave the invocation, which is traditionally done by religious leaders of varying faiths. Mehta’s invocation reflected on the civic duties of the board members and how to do what’s best for our county. Back in December some Democrats on the board questioned whether prayer should be included at the start of their meetings in the first place. While some Republican board members argued the invocations encourage diversity by including different religions.
