Stroll to the Polls
On Sunday, 69 American Government students from Waubonsie Valley and Metea Valley high schools joined the League of Women Voters Naperville in their “Stroll to the Polls” event. Students surveyed four low-turnout precincts from the previous two primaries and encouraged voters in those precincts to participate in the March 20 primary elections. After the March 20 election, students and their teachers will review voter turnout numbers to see if they were able to positively affect voter turnout in the precincts they visited.
25th Saint Patrick’s Parade
Also this weekend – Saint Patrick’s Day was celebrated early. The annual St. Paddy’s Days 5K saw over 1700 race through Downtown Naperville before the 25th Saint Patrick’s Day Parade marched through. The first parade in 1993 was just a few blocks long with a handful of people marching. But in this year’s spectacle, there were 93 parade units and thousands of folks lining the streets with their green.
Benet Boys Basketball
It was an exciting weekend in sports for the Naperville area. On Friday night, Benet Academy boys basketball won its 18th game in a row, this one over Willowbrook in the Sectional Championship. The 67-40 triumph was the third sectional title in the last five years for the Redwings and puts Benet one game away from a trip to state. The Redwings will face Larkin in the Super-sectional at Northern Illinois University tomorrow night at 7:30.
Waubonsie Valley Hockey
The Warriors hockey club played one of the most complete games of the season as the Warriors shutout Lincoln-Way 4 to nothing in the Blackhawk Cup quarterfinals. WV advances to the semifinals tomorrow night against top seeded Glenbard. If the Warriors win, they will move on to the State Championship game at the United Center on March 23rd.
NCC Track & Field
And the North Central College Men’s Indoor Track and Field team brought home another national trophy. The Cardinals finished just one point behind first place Mount Union, finishing as the national runner up. After winning the National title a year ago, NCC saw 12 athletes earn All-American status this year, led by Dhruvil Patel, who won the 5,000 meter National Championship. Congrats on another outstanding season!
