Naperville Now 03-07-18

Massive Sports Complex Planned:

A massive sports complex is coming to Naperville. CityGate North will be a 245,000 square foot, 4,500-seat facility with two regulation-size ice rinks. The center is being built by Calamos Real Estate, next to the current CityGate Centre campus, on the north side of Ferry Road, off of I-88 and Route 59. Construction on the multi-use sports, entertainment and expo center could begin in spring or early summer.

Home Rule Sales Tax Hike:

Last night the Naperville City Council voted to raise the home rule sales tax from .5 percent to .75 percent, making the total sales tax in the city 7.75 percent. The change will fill a $1.4 million budget gap, which was created when council decided not to raise the property tax. The measure was approved in an 8-1 vote. Councilman John Krummen was the lone ‘no’ vote, saying he would rather raise the property tax, which is expected to happen in 2019 anyway.

Boys Basketball Sectional Semi Finals:

The boys basketball sectional semi finals were held at Glenbard East last night. The top seed Naperville North took on the 5 seed, Willowbrook in the first game. The Huskies were looking for a 2nd straight sectional title and things looked good early as Chris Johnson scored 8 points in the 2nd quarter to put North up 20-12 at halftime.

The game went back and forth in the third until Willowbrook sophomore Everett Stubblefield caught fire, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the final four minutes of the quarter, giving the Warriors the lead. Tommy Welch scored a team high 17 and kept the Huskies within striking distance, but Willowbrook was able to put the game away and complete the upset by a score of 47-43.

In the 2nd game of the night, Benet Academy jumped all over Bartlett with balanced scoring and suffocating defense, holding a 24-11 halftime lead. Colin Crothers scored 9 points and had 7 blocks while Will Engles poured in 15 to go along with 10 rebounds as the Redwings advanced to the sectional final for the 3rd time in the last five years. The 47-41 win was the 17th straight victory for the Redwings. Benet and Willowbrook tip off Friday night at 7.
