A local organization is working to give the gift of music to children in Honduras.
The Rotary Club of Naperville Downtown is collecting gently used violins to donate to students in La Uñion, Honduras.
At their most recent meeting, Ashley Penick donated her childhood violin, hoping to inspire a child.
“Music just opens so many doors for kids with interaction of appreciating music and even reading and math skills. I know it helped me as a kid and I figured there was some children who could use the love of music I had as a kid so I might as well pass it on to someone who needs it,” she said.
Music is a small part of a larger initiative of a micro finance program the group supports, aiming to improve impoverished areas through innovation and research.
The violins collected will be given to the students sometime in spring.
