School is back in session and students all over are headed off for another year of reading, writing and arithmetic. For the students and faculty at Naperville Central High School the new year brings new experiences in a renovated facility.
Officials with School District 203 invested $87 million into a much needed extreme makeover for the school.
“We came from a building that was old and failing apart,” said James Galanis, a humanities teacher at Central for 23 years. “It was just a delight to walk into an educational facility that is just overwhelming to come into and teach.”
“What makes Central great is the people,” said Principal Bill Wiesbrook. “The students are great. The staff’s great. But our facility wasn’t great.”
To make it great, the school added larger classrooms with white boards, wider and brighter hallways, a football field with synthetic turf, a newer gymnasium and improved science labs.
Students say with all the additions and renovations to the school, it’s easy to get lost. But with an interactive map, they can find their way.
“I’m getting used to it and actually like it,” said senior Stephanie Nowak.
“It’s a big improvement from what it was and I’m glad it changed.”
Many students and staff agree the most impressive addition is the new cafeteria, which is able to accommodate more students. “Now kids don’t have to sit on the floor anymore when they eat lunch,” said Wiesbrook. The cafeteria also has a giant TV for viewing school announcements.
There’s one thing that hasn’t changed since the school was first built in 1950.
“That great family, caring atmosphere that made NCHS great and will continue to make it great,” said Wiesbrook.
“It’s just that the facility is different now and it’s better.”
The school’s renovations have come a long way but there’s a long road ahead yet. Crews will be building a 3-story addition at the north entrance and finishing the math and music classrooms.
They expect to finish the school completely in just over a year from now.
