For the last two school years Naperville Central High School students have put up with congested hallways, mobile classrooms and construction noise. Now with renovations nearly complete, Naperville Central is ready for the 21st Century.
“The first impression when you walk in the door is, ‘this is very nice,”said the principal of Naperville Central, Bill Wiesbrook. “That’s a great way to enter a school building.”
“It feels like we’ve been here for four years but then again not because everything is different,” said Wojtek Skowronski, a senior at Naperville Central. “It’s a whole new school so it’s a nice feeling,”
After ten weeks of working the front entrance, the fine arts wing, and all three gyms are near completion. Director of facilities and construction, Ralph Weaver, says there were more than 400 construction workers onsite this summer.
“It’s the first time we have ever taken on something this massive of a renovation to a high school at least in the last 35 years that I’ve been here and I think its turned out to be a fantastic project,” said Weaver.
While students will see fewer construction workers this year than the past Weaver knows there is still work to be done.
“We will definitely go through and do some paint touch up. We will probably have to go through and do some tile work here and there, some carpentry work, some electrical work, so there’s just different things around the building that have to have their final touches,” said Weaver.
Officials say the new smart boards and internet capabilities on campus can provide more opportunities for the students.
“I think we’ve been turning out excellent students and I think this facility will just kind of be like the cherry on top, just even better than it used to be,” said Wiesbrook.
The budget for the entire project was around $84 million, but Weaver says when construction is finally complete they will be $7 million dollars under budget.
Weaver expects everything to be completed and the contractors off school grounds by November 1st. The school will hold an open house for everyone in the community on October 23rd.
