Family and friends gathered to play, eat, and relax while taking part in an old American pastime.
Hula hooping and water balloon tossing were just a couple of events at the first ever Hometown Picnic, hosted by Naper Settlement.
Patrons had the choice to bring their own food or buy it from Naperville’s own Belgio’s catering.
Attendees also enjoyed the sounds from the Naperville Light Guard Band, led by Ron Keller, while eating their meals.
“This is the first time that we have been doing it. It fits in with out summer theme this year, which is ‘Celebrate the American Spirit’, so it is perfect for it,” said Jen Edginton, Learning Experiences Coordinator at Naper Settlement. “What is more American than having a picnic outside?”
Normally, spitting out your food is discouraged at the dinner table, but it was perfectly acceptable for the watermelon seed-spitting contest.
The event concluded with the apple pie baking contest, which 17 pies were entered.
For those who missed summer events will not have to wait long for another. The settlement will host the “Dinner on the Town” gala in September.
