Morton Arboretum’s First Namesake Beer

The Morton Arboretum has announced their first-ever beer, the Arbor Oak Amber Ale. They’re using their expert research on oak trees to concoct the brew.

“We have some of the most extensive collections of Oak trees than anywhere around the world. Oaks have an extremely long history in winemaking and the brewing process, so it just seemed like a natural fit to make that connection,” said Jenelle Hardtke, Special Events Manager for the Morton Arboretum.

The beer gives off flavors of warm vanilla and a citrus -spice finish by combining Wisconsin’s special roast malt with the Arboretum’s own contributions.

“In order to get that Oak flavor in our beer, we actually used Oak chips from our own Arboretum grounds and we took those Oak chips and added them into the last stages of the fermentation process- they’re aged for about two weeks to impart those flavors and that’s what gives us our beer,” said Hardtke.

Brewed in partnership with Chicago’s Lake Effect Brewing Company, the beer will be available starting December 15 through April 2016, exclusively at the Ginko Cafe.
