Dr. Cathy Subber has many titles: owner of Advanced Heath of Naperville, Chairman of the Board for the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce, head of the Naperville Moms Network, and owner of Café N Play, but her favorite role is mom to 10-year-old Christopher and 9-year-old Nick.
“They remind me on a day-to-day basis not to take myself too seriously and although I’m involved in all of these things,” said Subber. “They pull me back down to earth and make sure that I know that number one they are really the priority.”
Recognizing that when it comes to being a mom, here’s often strength in numbers, she took over the Naperville Moms Network, a website with 2,400 members that brings together area moms for help and support.
“Whether it be finding someone with kids the same age as your kids, finding a running group, book clubs and bunko groups so there’s things to do when mom’s aren’t with their kids,” said Subber. “So they remember that they’re still a woman, not just a mom.”
Subber took her online network one step further when she opened Café and Play in April of last year—providing a place for moms to connect, caffeinate, and corral their kids in a child friendly environment.
“So many things are done just online,” said Subber. “You meet all these wonderful person online nowadays, and so many things are done by email and through Facebook, where you’re not actually physically connecting. And café and play is this wonderful opportunity to meet your girlfriends and have a cup of coffee and let your kids play and make sure you’re getting that face time.”
This passion to create change came from her father and grandfather and she hopes to do the same with her boys.
“I enjoy letting them see that I work hard, and that my efforts in the community help give back from other people,” Subber said. “I try to highlight that for my boys so they grow up understanding that giving back to your community and being a part of your community is not and option, it’s something you need to do.”
“She comforts me. She’s very likable,” said Subber’s son Christopher.
With her busy schedule, many wonder how is she able to keep everything running smoothly.
“I think it’s really important to make sure as a mom you take the time and not apologize for it to do the things that you love to make sure you are feeding yourself and doing the things you love so that you can give that love and respect back to your kids,” says Subber.
And the perks make it all worthwhile.
