On a visit to Naperville, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon and actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson spoke in support of Illinois’ marriage equality bill.
At the Tie Bar, the Modern Family star and his fiancé Justin Mikita promoted their newly released bow tie line called “Tie The Knot,” which will benefit lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. “We developed ‘Tie The Knot’ with this very intention of being able to come to the battle grounds and really lend our voices to bring a light to these states that are fighting for marriage equality,” said Ferguson.
Lt. Simon urged people to contact their lawmakers about the bill that will allow same sex couples to legally marry in the state. Illinois could be the tenth state to legalize same-sex unions.
As of now, the state recognizes same-sex unions in the forms of civil unions, providing couples the same rights of marriage. “Those are the folks that are going to soccer practice. Those are the folks who are volunteering at the PTA, and those are the families who make up folks in the state of Illinois and it’s time to move towards full equality,” said Simon.
Greg Shugar owns the Tie Bar with his wife, Gina. “We love being a part of the team and part of the cause, and we are proud to be Illinois residents today and we look forward to seeing that this bill gets passed,” he said.
The following day the group traveled to Springfield for “Bow Tie Lobby Day” to conclude their rally. Legislators are encouraged to wear bow ties in support of marriage equality.
The state Senate’s return to the capitol for a weeklong session will be the final stop for the decision to allow same sex marriage in Illinois.
