Meaningful Meals for Naperville Seniors

Nearly 30 civic leaders lent their helping hands for some special deliveries.

Instead of serving up tickets, Naperville Deputy Chief of Police Mike Anders is serving up meals to seniors.

He’s volunteering in March for Meals’ “Community Champions Week”, delivering freshly packaged food to seniors in need. It’s part of the DuPage Senior Citizen’s Council’s Meals on Wheels program.

“I just thought it was a great opportunity to come on out, support a great organization which I think is just an outstanding cause to try to make sure hunger is not an issue in this area, and it really shouldn’t be an issue anywhere, in my opinion, in the U.S.” said Anders.

Volunteers regularly deliver these meals five days a week, serving seniors in DuPage County since 1983.

“We aren’t just delivering meals, we are sometimes the only person that sees these seniors each day. And the volunteers develop friendships and bonds that don’t have anyone else in their life, potentially,” said Aubrey Van Reken, a board member of the DuPage Senior Citizens Council.

Meals on Wheels helps nearly 2.4 million seniors around the country.

With funding uncertain, Meals on Wheels hopes their March for Meals event brings awareness for the good cause.
