Local businesses and the Internet will soon be on even playing fields.
Senator Dick Durbin recently made an appearance at Anderson’s Bookshop to gain support for the Marketplace Fairness Act.
The bill would allow each state to enforce their existing sales tax on Internet purchases. Illinois loses more than $150 million every year in uncollected Internet sales taxes.
Bookshop owner Becky Anderson is a supporter of the act and says she loses when shoppers buy books on online with no sales tax versus at her store in downtown Naperville.
Congress is expected to approve the Marketplace Fairness Act by the end of the year.
