As you’re preparing your holiday dinner and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, keep your eye out for a couple of local students. Naperville Districts 203 and 204 each have a student marching in the parade.
Naperville Central Drum Major Alex Reeder will be striking up the Great American Band in the parade. The Marching Redhawks senior won the chance to lead the parade at summer drum major camp. He’s excited to showcase his talents.
“I am one of the first people that march by. I just know it’s going to be so cool, seeing the millions of people lining the streets and just marching straight down, with them all cheering,” said Reeder.
DJ Alstadt, Naperville Central’s Director of Bands, says Reeder has a strong work ethic, and that’s why he was chosen.
“He’s a great young man who went out to a camp for hundreds of kids, and throughout that process they picked him. It’s a rich tradition and we’re really excited he’s from Naperville Central,” said Alstadt.
Another local student who’s going to be in the parade is Metea Valley’s Brittany Oleksy, who won her opportunity at summer cheerleading camp.
“I’m so excited. It’s such a great opportunity. I live and breathe cheerleading, so it’s a big thing,” said Oleksy.
Oleksy will be performing with the Varsity Spirit Cheer Group. The junior is one of Metea’s captains. Head Cheerleading Coach Sarah DePasquale says it’s an honor for the new school to have a cheerleader in the parade.
“Having somebody go to this event and being ones of hundreds of people that are there, that does live by our motto Metea life, is wonderful for our school,” said DePasquale.
Both students say they’re looking forward to meeting new people and practicing with them before the parade. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off at 9AM CST. You can watch it on NBC.
