More than 23 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol use problems, but prevention is the goal of the Naperville community. Parents from each of the area’s school districts came to city hall for a program called “What Parents Need to Know.” A panel of experts addressed the crowd, stressing ways to prevent, detect, and get help for teens addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Panelist, Katherine Steinberg is a local teacher who lost her son two years ago to a heroin drug addiction. “Don’t be afraid to have them arrested. Having their future damaged, blackened, a little bit, because you had them arrested is better than not having them all,” says the mom.
Authorities recommend taking advantage of the many support programs in the area, like at the police department where there are two social workers on staff.
This forum follows several, in light of the recent upswing of heroin related deaths in the area.
Last year there were 47 heroin arrests in Naperville.
