Little Hats Big Hearts in Naperville

Babies board at Edward will sport homemade red hats instead of the other caps usually given by the hospital.

It’s all part of the “Little Hats Big Hearts” campaign by the American Heart Association. The goal is to raise awareness for heart disease, the number one killer of Americans and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.

“It also opens up a conversation between parents and the staff and there’s on-going research being done in this area, so it’s a really nice opportunity to talk about cardiac research right now,” said Cathy Smith, Registered Nurse at Edward Hospital.

The little red hats are knitted or crocheted by volunteers, who then donate them to participating hospitals like Edward to spread awareness.

“It’s a very special gesture that someone took out their own time, if they’re a working mother or grandmother, for other individuals’ children to just have a little special reminder that everyone is thought of during the heart association month,” said Adrienne Sagen, a Naperville resident and new mother.

Donations for next year’s campaign will be accepted beginning in august.
