Two years ago, Naperville resident Kate Schultz, decided to do something different for her 30th birthday.
Instead of asking for gifts, she asked for donations to a food drive benefiting Loaves and Fishes and also donated a few birthday bags for the clients.
Schultz’s college friend loved the idea of birthday bags and started a group “Let them Eat Cake” in Minnesota soon after.
“We kind of were playing off each other and our desire to do something,” said Schultz. “So, last year I said I wanted to become a part of her group and be the Naperville chapter. Last year on my birthday I said my goal for this year was to focus on getting 32 birthday bags to donate to Loaves & Fishes in honor of turning 32.”
Last month through Facebook and a GoFundMe page, Schultz began collecting both party supplies and monetary donations to help create those 32 bags equipped with things to throw the perfect party.
“Plates, napkins, cutlery, a table cloth, invites, thank yous, goodie bags,” explained Schultz. “And of course cake and frosting because what’s a birthday party without a birthday cake.”
Beneath the hundreds of streamers and frosting she’s collected, Schultz has a deeper meaning for doing this act of kindness.
“I do this to honor my mom,” said Schultz. “She passed away 7 years ago and she always gave me a great birthday. I had such a great time at my birthday parties as a kid. She made it really special. And this is a fun way to give back and honor that memory.”
Kate plans to celebrate her birthday, July 15, by dropping off at least 32 birthday bags to Loaves & Fishes to help spread a little birthday joy.
