Most professionals know that networking is an important part of any business, but some may not know how to do it correctly.
That’s why the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce held their latest luncheon titled “Learn to Love Networking and Make it Work for You.”
Kate Bensen, the President & CEO of the Chicago Network, spoke at the lunch, highlighting the importance of having a strong network no matter what industry you work in.
“You will have more job and business opportunities, it will foster your advancement, you will have broader and deeper knowledge of what you do and it will improve your capacity to innovate- in this time of disruption and change, everyone has to be an innovator,” explained Bensen.
Bensen said to avoid viewing networking like a transaction of simply exchanging business cards, and instead try making connections based on shared experiences.
“Develop an expertise in something that you enjoy, because you will love to talk about it, people will seek you out and you might reach people you wouldn’t otherwise, it could be related to your profession or not at all,” added Bensen.
One last tip- only accept invitations on LinkedIn from people you’ve had meaningful connections with.
