You can now add state legislators to the list of Illinois employees taking a pay cut. Governor Pat Quinn signed House Bill 3188 into law last week, meaning state representatives and state senators will take 12 furlough days for fiscal year 2013, equivalent to a 5% pay cut.
As a result, the cost-cutting measure is projected to save the state of Illinois around $1 million. Representative Darlene Senger (R-96th District) was one of more than 60 lawmakers that co-sponsored the bill.
“Today’s environment and market, this is just something you have to do,” said Senger. “Other people don’t even have jobs for crying out loud, and again it’s important just to show everybody that you’re serious about what I’m going to apply to other people I’m going to apply to myself also.”
This is the fourth consecutive year the General Assembly has cut its salaries.
