Last Fling Wrap Up 2014

As summer comes to a close, Naperville Jaycees wrapped up the summer with one Last Fling.

Residents and visitors flooded the streets of downtown on opening day in hopes that this year the rain would stay away.

“We’re a little worried but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that if we do see anything maybe it’s a tiny sprinkle just to cool things off a little bit, but nothing too crazy,” said Danielle Tufano, PR Chairperson for Last Fling.

Despite some drizzles, rain didn’t keep people from enjoying their weekend.

“I came to the last fling to have fun and go on a bunch of rides,” said Nathan Schlewitt.

“Were here for the bands we love all the bands, Maggie Speaks, ARRA, we’ll be here every night this weekend just enjoying its close to home, good venue, so I just love coming to all the concerts, I come every year,” said Diane Duncan.

While some came for the live performances by bands ARRA, O.A.R., Vertical Horizon, Smash Mouth and Naperville’s own, Maggie Speaks, others came for the food competitions at Family Fun Land located in Naper Settlement.

“You had to put your hands behind your back and you had to go just dip in and start eating the whole thing,” said Sam Kovar, food eating contest participant.

On the last day, hundreds of participants raced to the finish line before enjoying the Labor Day parade.

Although the day was hit with some rain, many still stayed to watch the parade participants, including this years grand marshal, Mayor George Pradel.

Fling organizers said that this event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of their hundreds of volunteers.

“It’s a lot of planning and a lot of commitment but it teaches you a lot about leadership skills and how meticulous you have to be in working with a team,” said volunteer, Christine Haselhorst.

“I really like giving back to the community, and it’s always fun to be here volunteering with everyone,” said volunteer, Breanne Kuntz.

The last fling will be able to use the proceeds to donate to nearly 100 local not-for-profits.
