This past City Council meeting was Kenn Miller’s last time sitting on the dais, after he announced back in August he would not seek another term.
For Councilman Kenn Miller serving as an elected official runs in the family.
“My father was mayor for 20 years in my hometown of Erie, IL. Since then my sister is mayor this is her third term and she won re-election for her fourth term,” said Miller. “It’s kind of in our blood, but I think my sister and I grew up with my father recognizing we need to give back to the community in some way.”
Miller gave back to the community by serving on Naperville’s City Council for eight years and running for mayor in 2011. He says he will miss the job, but will miss the interaction with residents more.
“That’s the best part, going out into the community and talking to people about issues. I’ve made a lot of great friends in the past 8 years,” said Miller.
Those who worked closely with Miller reminisced about the man they call a leader.
“The man’s a rock. He is so stable with his thinking and so consistent,” said Councilman Steve Chirico. “He really is an analytical thinker and it was great to have someone like that on council.”
“Kenn Miller is a delight to work with,” says Mayor A. George Pradel. “He’s so knowledgeable and personable and he mixes the two and he makes it wonderful to work side by side.”
While Miller took part in a number of influential decisions, one in particular stands out.
“We joined the Illinois Municipal Electric Association, and now the citizens of Naperville and the City of Naperville are a part owner of a coal powered plant in southern Illinois,” said Miller. “That will continue to give us supply and provide, inexpensive, I don’t want to say cheap, but inexpensive electricity for the next decade or two. And I think that will be a really good thing for the city.”
Councilman Kenn Miller plans to now focus on his expanding business and spend more time with family, but he will continue to call Naperville home.
