Keeping Naperville’s Seniors Safe

Keeping seniors safe was the topic of the most recent speaker forum hosted by the city’s Senior Task Force.

Members of the Naperville Fire Department and county level officials spoke of how they can help seniors in emergency and nonemergency situations.

“Some of the things we do now are senior home visits where we’ll look for instances where they might trip or things like that, because the number one call that we’ll go on is falls, and if a senior falls and breaks a hip that really could be a life-threat for them,” said George Hyland, Bureau Chief of Community Services with the Naperville Fire Department.

Another topic covered was the Smart 9-1-1 program, which works by setting up an online profile that gives emergency crews vital information ahead of a call when seconds count.

“Sometimes you wait until you need to use something before you find out about it, and then you’re panicking at that point, and thinking ‘well why didn’t I learn about this before now or before I fell or had a problem,’ so I think this is really good for seniors to know,” said Marilyn Pallot, an attendee to the speaker forum.

The next Senior Task Force speaker forum will be held Friday, April 9 with State Representative Grant Wehrli speaking.
